Difference between Mentoring and Coaching

There are a few distinct differences between mentoring and coaching:

  • Coaching relationships are more short-term than mentor-mentee relationships. Coaching can last anywhere from 8 weeks to a year, whereas mentors can support their mentees for several years.
  • Mentoring focuses on the overall development of an individual, whereas coaching aims to solve specific problems that the client faces.
  • Coaching is more structured — clients usually meet coaches for an hour every week. On the other hand, mentors meet their mentees more informally, as and when needed.
  • The coaching plan is designed by both the coach and the client, whereas the mentoring agenda is set by the mentee. The mentor simply supports the mentee with their goals.
  • In coaching, a coach is likely to do most of the questioning, trying to help the client understand themself. On the other hand, a mentee will likely ask the mentor most of the questions, in an effort to learn from their experience.
  • Coaching outcomes are specific and measurable, whereas mentoring outcomes are more subjective, and goals can shift over time.

  • Mutual learning through observation, feedback, and reflection is the core value that peer coaching operates on.

Duration

  • Support groups are short term interventions.
  • On the other hand, Peer Coaching is a long-term process.

Leadership

  • Support group leaders may or may not have professional training in helping members through their problems.
  • Peer coaches are person-centered and solution-focused. They help their clients build strategies to live a better life.
