With the US in the midst of what’s being called the worst mental health crisis in decades, psychiatrist and Healthy Gamer President Alok Kanojia takes an unconventional approach to reaching individuals who need help.

[Kanojia] says even before COVID-19, the mental health care system was ill equipped to handle new “assaults on our cognition,” as he calls them: apps designed to keep you scrolling, video platforms designed to keep you watching, games designed to keep you playing.

In [Kanojia’s] interactions with other gamers he saw that some could use counseling, too, describing traditional mental health experts as frequently unfamiliar with gaming culture.

Thanks to Dr. K, I now have a far better and more nuanced understanding of what role gaming plays in my child's life, which has allowed me to communicate about gaming with less judgment and more compassion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is coaching?

Coaching is commonly defined as a process to help improve a person's performance. It is a self-directed process that helps a person change in the way they wish to change. Coaching builds awareness, empowers choice, and leads to change.

HG Coaching will help you better understand how your mind works and provide a path forward, so you can build the life you want and you achieve your goals. This program is not meant to diagnose mental illness, prescribe medication, or be used for urgent health crises. Coaching is not therapy nor a substitute for therapy, and coaches are not therapists.

How is coaching different from therapy?

While both coaching and therapy use evidence-based techniques and intentional dialogue, there are important differences. Coaching is focused on "building" through planning, introspection, and awareness, while therapy is more about "fixing" something through clinical diagnoses, medication, and/or treatment. Coaching helps prioritize, set goals, and understand the root of discontent or unhappiness. Therapy is intended to alleviate clinical issues such as anxiety, depression, or trauma. You can learn more about the efficacy of coaching here. Or, learn more about the differences between coaching and therapy here.

What happens in Parent Coaching?

Parents/guardians meet with a HG Coach weekly for 1-on-1 sessions (50 minutes) where they will navigate feelings around their child’s internet and gaming habits and develop the skills to communicate and set effective boundaries with them.

What should I expect to gain from HG Coaching?

While every coaching experience varies, most clients gain:

  • An increased sense of self-awareness
  • The ability to set boundaries
  • The ability to create work that is personally fulfilling
  • Increased self-esteem
  • Healthier personal and professional relationships
  • Resiliency from setbacks
  • The ability to anticipate and manage stress

What if I need to miss or reschedule a session?

HG Personal, HG Career, and HG Parent Coaching sessions can be rescheduled or canceled with 24 hours notice. A session is considered missed with no refunds if:

  • You fail to reschedule or cancel outside the 24 hour period before your next session’s start time or
  • You are more than 15 minutes late

HG Group Coaching involves coordination between many people, and thus sessions cannot be rescheduled or skipped for individual group members. Any unattended group sessions or cancellations within less than 24 hours notice of the next session: will be considered missed with no refund. Reschedule/skips are permitted if agreed upon by the whole group/coach.

What is the cancellation policy?

Trying HG Coaching is entirely risk-free. If you feel you’ve met your goals or would like to drop coaching early, we will refund 100% of sessions that you paid for but didn’t use. Your refund will be credited back to your original form of payment. Refunds take 5 - 7 business days to be processed. Past or missed sessions are nonrefundable.
